The MELTA 2013 Conference in Johor Bahru has just finished - once again a very worthwhile time for presenters and participants. We (Ruth Wickham, Salma Abdul Razak, and Azlinda Abd. Aziz) presented a lively workshop entitled: "Using Rhythm in Language Arts to Improve Language Learning and Motivation". The workshop paper, handout, and PowerPoint can now be downloaded from the MELTA 2013 page.
One of the reasons we teach English songs and poetry to our young learners is to help them develop natural-sounding pronunciation. So it rather defeats the purpose if we are teaching them incorrect pronunciation from the start. This page looks into the problem of final consonants (which are generally pronounced as a glottal stop in BM) and how to teach clearer pronunciation.
Materials written for the new (LGA3104) Plays and Drama for Young Learners course at IPGKDRI includes some jazz chants and games which have been written to accompany a story adapted to a play for young children to learn to perform. The materials are available on this page.
The story, "Disappearing Baby", is available on the same page, and also on the Stories for Malaysian Kids website on the Stories for Little Kids page, along with pictures to create your own Big Book.
This class on Poetry for Primary School Students was part of the Children's Literature PISMP course. (It has also been posted on Kuala Terengganu Fellows 2012 website under Workshops and Courses, Storytelling Course.)
It includes the PowerPoint presentation for this session and some ideas for teaching poetry.
